Dive Into Philly Pools

Cool off with our list of family-friendly pools in the city (and a bit beyond).

Note: Because of this week’s hot weather, all city pools are offering open swim during their operating hours, from 11 am — 7 pm. 


Now that school is out, it’s time to figure out where to cool off — and while away an afternoon. Philly is brimming with great playgrounds and recreation centers that have pools open to the public, and there’s a few awesome private options as well. Gather up the family for a day of fun in the sun and dive into one of these cool Philly pools. 

Public Pools

City pools open on a rolling basis between June 22 and July 1. These are the listed hours, but they are definitely subject to change, so be sure to call or visit your local pool to make sure.

Vare Recreation Center

2600 Morris St., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 22

Open Swim: Monday — Friday 1 — 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday 12 — 5 pm.

Family Swim: Monday — Friday 6 — 7 pm


Vare Recreation Center strives to bring the community together and keep our children safe through a large variety of programs and activities. Aside from having a great pool to take a dive in throughout the summer, Vare offers a variety of sports and drama classes. 

Fox Chase Recreation Center

7901 Ridgeway St., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 23

Free Swim: Monday — Tuesday 1 — 4 pm

Parents and Tots: Monday — Tuesday 12:30 — 1 pm

Family Swim: Saturday 12 — 2:30 pm, 3:30 — 5 pm


Plenty of sports fields, a pool, and fun water sculptures for the kids to play in.  There is also family swim, toddler and parent swim, and adult swim times during surrounding times and weekends. Swim lessons are offered and the center also has a swim team.

Francisville Playground

1737-39 Francis St., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 23

Open Swim: Monday — Friday 1 — 4 pm, Saturday — Sunday 12 — 5 pm

Family Swim: Monday — Friday 5 — 6 pm


Lounge by the pool while the kids are at camp. Camp runs July 5 — August 12, so sign up quickly! There are sports fields on site as well, and they even offer Aqua Zumba and yoga as well as a swim team and lessons!

Pleasant Playground

6720 Boyer St., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 23

Swim Times: TBA

Don’t be fooled by the name: this 4.7-acre spot is packed with things to do. Yes, there’s a playground, but the pool wins raves from the neighborhood, and there are also basketball and tennis courts and ball fields. Fitness and martial arts classes are offered here seasonally.

Cione Playground

2600 E. Aramingo Ave., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 22

Free Swim: Daily, Noon — 4 pm; Monday — Friday, 5 — 6 pm


With the Fishtown “Swimmo” closed for the summer, this Kensington spot will be a hot ticket. There’s plenty to do on this 4.8-acre site besides swim, too.

Kendrick Recreation Center

5822-24 Ridge Ave., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 26

Kendrick Recreation Center makes for the perfect summer destination with a beautiful pool as well as tennis and volleyball courts. Cool off and stay active all season long!

Cobbs Creek Recreation Center

250 s 63rd St., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 26

Free Swim: Monday — Friday 1 — 4 pm, Saturday 1 — 5 pm

Family Swim: Monday — Friday 4 — 5 pm


Come lounge by this comfortable and casual pool. The recreation center also has the Laura Simpson Skate House, so you can roller skate before or after your dip.

Northern Liberties Recreation Center

321 Fairmount Ave., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 27

Open Swim: Monday — Friday 1 — 4 pm

Family Swim: Monday — Friday 5 — 6 pm, Saturday 2 — 5 pm


When you’re not cooling off by the pool, you can check out unique programs at this rec center like chess, improv theater, pottery, and karate. The center also offers swim lessons and a swim team!

Lonnie Young Recreation Center

1100 E. Chelten Ave., Philadelphia

A pool and plenty of sports fields. Tucked away in the Germantown/Chestnut Hill area, this makes for a nice quiet place to take the kids. They also have fitness classes for adults!

Jacob’s Playground

4500 Linden Ave., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 28

Open Swim: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1 — 4 pm, Saturday 12 — 3 pm

Family Swim: Monday — Friday 6 — 7 pm, Sunday 12 — 5 pm


On almost 15 acres of space, you’ll find a pool, ball fields, and even a hockey rink! Perfect for sports lovers! They also offer swim lessons and a swim team.

Simpson Recreation Center

1010 Arrott St., Philadelphia


Opening Date: June 29

Open Swim: Monday — Friday 1 — 4 pm, Saturday 1 — 5 pm, Sunday 12 — 5 pm

Family Swim: Monday — Friday 5 — 6 pm


This recreation center is a laid-back pool option with plenty of sports fields for play. The pool is family-friendly and there are sports classes for kids of all ages.

Roberts Pool

215 Hillcrest Ave., Collingswood, New Jersey

Open through September 4, 11:30 am — 8 pm Monday — Saturday, 11:30 am — 7 pm Sunday


No, this pool isn’t in the city, but it’s a quick drive from many neighborhoods. You don’t have to be a Collingswood resident to buy a family membership, but you do pay twice as much $500 for the season).

Private Options

University City Swim Club

300 Hanson St., Philadelphia

Open through September 10, 10 am — 10 pm


Enjoy your summer at the University City Swim Club. Four pools are on site including a leisure pool for the whole family, lap pool for exercising, a diving well, and a toddler pool for our littlest swimmers. There are grills available for afternoon barbecues and plenty of takeout options close by.

Flourtown Swim Club

1528 Bethlehem Pike, Flourtown

Open through September 4, Noon — 8 pm


This is a low-key place that attracts tons of Northwest Philly families. It features two pools plus a baby pool, as well as a swim team and private lessons.

Bryn Athyn Swim Club

2845 Buck Road, Bryn Athyn

Monday — Thursday 12 — 8 pm

Friday — Saturday 11:30 am — 9 pm

Sunday 1 — 8 pm


Bryn Athyn Swim Club is the perfect family friendly pool club to cool off all summer long. If you’re worried about your youngest children, intensive swim lessons are offered throughout the summer. Aside from their gorgeous pools and comfy facilities, the club strives to bring community together and offers activity nights for kids and families.
