This Season’s Kimmel Center Family Theater Lineup: ‘PJ Masks,’ Daniel Tiger, and More
Tickets are on sale for shows the whole family will love.
The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ 2017-18 Family Discovery Series will feature eight shows geared towards young audiences, many based on some of today’s most popular children’s shows.
The series features some old favorites, as well as some newcomers. All are designed to get the whole family dancing, laughing, and learning from September 2017 through May 2018. Studies show that exposing children to the theater arts improves enhanced knowledge, ability to read emotions in others, and increases vocabulary.
“This season offers high-energy, educational, and engaging shows that will both foster the children’s love for performing arts and create amazing memories for parents and kid alike,” said Anne Ewers, president and CEO of the Kimmel Center, in a press release.
Here’s a list of the shows in the 2017-18 Family Discovery Series:
September 22 – 23, 2017
Come on the adventures of Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko on their adventure to save the day from Romeo, Night Ninja, and Luna Girl! Featuring live acrobatics on stage and music from the show, watch the PJ Masks cartoons in this larger-than-life production.
December 26 – 31, 2017
This eight-member performance troupe uses everything but the ordinary to make percussive beats that will get everyone moving. From matchboxes and garbage cans to brooms and hubcaps, watch the ordinary become extraordinary where the whole world becomes an instrument.
‘Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live: King for a Day!’
January 5 – 6, 2018
Explore the neighborhood of Make-Believe, sharing friendship and helping one another with Daniel and his friends, as they hop aboard the trolley for lots of singing and dancing.
‘The Johnny Shortcake Show’
SEI Innovation Studio
January 27 – 28, 2018
This show is an interactive experience for all kids looking for a funky dance party. Sure to entertain all ages, Johnny Showcase brings a lot of soul and funk to the kids’ stage. This production, which was commissioned by the Kimmel Center for Philadelphia children, is having its world premiere.
‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’

This musical adaptation of the classic book (and fun Jim Carrey movie) comes with original songs and a lot of performing penguin puppets, as Mr. Popper’s dreams come true on stage.
‘Wild Kratts Live!’

Whether your kids know Martin and Chris Kratt all the way back to their Zoboomafoo days or have just discovered this PBS show, they’ll love this funny and energetic performance. This wild, nature-themed show teaches kids the importance of animal conservation and what they can do to play their part. This show is part of a national tour in association with the Kratt Brothers Creature Hero Society, which has successfully protected various wildlife by creating nature reserves around the country.
‘The Sound of Music’
April 24 – 29, 2018
This beloved story of Maria and the von Trapp family comes alive on stage again. You probably already know most of the award-winning score by heart, so this is a great opportunity to bring it to a new generation.
‘Paw Patrol Live! The Great Pirate Adventures’
May 4 – 6, 2018
It’s Pirate Day at Adventure Bay, but Ryder and his team of pirate puppies are on a rescue mission to find the treasure before they can celebrate. Come along on this land-and-sea adventure as this wildly popular Nickelodeon show comes to life on stage.
