Moms! We love you! We are you! Mother’s Day is coming up, and whether you want to celebrate the mothers in your life or enjoy some quality time with your kids, there are so many ways to celebrate. From brunch to woodworking and everything in between, here are some special events around town to make your day memorable.

Crafty Events to Get Ready

Necklace Making for Mom at Little Moon + Arrow

Stop by anytime for a free Mother’s Day necklace making workshop, with all materials provided. Make colorful beaded necklaces with a sliding knot as a special gift.

Youth Workshop: Mother’s Day Gift and Card

May 5, 1 — 3 pm

Wayne Art Center, 413 Maplewood Ave., Wayne

 

Kids ages 7 and up can create a “top secret” Mother’s Day project. Kids will leave with a handmade gift wrapped and topped off with a special hand-printed card.

Mother’s Day Pottery Workshop

Daisy Chapman will teach kids (with an adult caregiver) how to make a Mother’s Day pottery gift.

All day long in the library, there will be arts and crafts supplies for kids and their caregivers to come and make Mother’s Day cards for all those special moms, grandmas, aunts, and mothering adults in their lives.

Make and Take Craft for Mother’s Day at Washington Avenue Green

Come to the pier and make nature crafts for Mother’s Day. Then stay and play along the trail, and learn about the wildlife that live at the waterfront. There will also be outdoor activity toys and refreshments.

Woven Beaded Jewelry Workshop with Sandi Young

Visiting artist Sandi Young will demonstrate and share her easy technique to finger weave beaded jewelry. For kids age 10 and up and a parent. Cost is $90 for a mother-daughter pair ($45 per person). Pre-registration is required.

Mother’s Day in the Workshop at Independence Seaport Museum

May 12, 1 — 5 pm

Build a flower box or toolbox with traditional woodworking tools. Guided sessions will take place every hour. $20 fee includes one tool kit to build your flower or tool box and admits one child to the museum. This workshop is recommended for kids age 6 and up.

Corsage Workshop at Wyck

May 12, 1:30 — 3 pm

Wyck Historic House, 6026 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia

 

This class is open to adults, as well as kids in eighth grade and up.  Martha Keen, Wyck’s Horticulturist and Landscape Manager, will teach students the history of corsages and how to make them. Participants will leave with two finished pieces of their own making.  All materials and supplies will be provided, but bring a pair of pruners and a hot glue gun if you own them.

Mother/Daughter Workshop: Beautiful Bangles

May 12, 2 — 4 pm

Wayne Art Center, 413 Maplewood Ave., Wayne

 

Design and decoupage a custom wooden bangle using strips of magazines and printed collage papers. This workshop is sure to bring you and your child together for fun, laughs and crafts! For kids ages 8 and up. Cost is $20 per person, and you should pre-register to reserve your spot.

Kids’ Crafts for Mom at Terrain

Mother’s Day Craft and Tea at Awbury Arboretum

Mother’s Day Weekend at Adventure Aquarium

Adventure Aquarium is celebrating moms with special themed programming, promotions, and penguins! The African penguin babies will make their official debut, and kids can continue the penguin-themed fun by coloring a penguin card for mom!

Colonial Chocolate Making

In celebration of Betsy Ross and all colonial mothers, meet three female entrepreneurs and learn how women and mothers played an active role during the American Revolution, from making important military supplies, such as flags and musket cartridges, to choosing “patriotic” beverages like hot chocolate and coffee, rather than tea. Sample the hot chocolate drink that colonists enjoyed.

Rock and Roll Playhouse Presents: Beatles for Kids

Using the songs from the most iconic musicians in rock history, the Rock and Roll Playhouse offers its core audience (typically kids ages 3-8 years old) games, movement, stories, and of course an opportunity to rock!

Bring Your Babe to Barre

This class will focus on building core strength and the strength of the pelvic floor as well as increasing flexibility, and toning arms, core, calves, and buns all while bonding with your baby. All babies that can be carried or worn are welcome.

Mother’s Day Tea Ceremony at Shofuso

Enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony led by Shofuso’s own tea school. Members of Urasenke Philadelphia will demonstrate a tea ceremony, and then provide guests with a bowl of matcha (green tea) and a seasonal sweet.

Mother and Child High Tea

In this three-hour workshop, mothers and children will learn about and prepare dishes for a high tea, hear about English table etiquette and experience the diverse blend of flavors, textures, colors and herbs while enjoying a meal together. The cost is $30 per person, and pre-registration is required. This is suited for kids ages 4 and up.

Proper English Tea

Jenkins Arboretum, 631 Berwyn Baptist Road, Devon

 

Just in time for Mother’s Day weekend, Jenkins Arboretum is partnering with A Taste of Britain to host a Proper English Tea. Enjoy delicious tea sandwiches, scones, pastries, teas, and champagne for the grownups. The gardens will be at the peak of spring bloom, so take a lovely garden walk after the tea.
