MLK Day-Off Camps Around Philly and the Main Line

Working on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? Here are some options for kids while school is out.

If your kids have off on Martin Luther King Jr. Day but you have work or an adults-only service project, you’re in luck: lots of places around town are offering one-day break camps sure to entertain kids of all ages and interests!

Philly

Lume Creative Learning Studios

January 15, 9 am — 3 pm

Ages 5-9

1916-18 E. Passyunk Ave., Philadelphia

 

Choose from full-day or half-day camp for a day of painting, drawing, and creating inspired by Martin Luther King. Before- and after-care available at an additional cost.

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education

January 12 and 15, 8 am — 3 pm

Ages 5-12

8480 Hagy’s Mill Road, Philadelphia

 

Turn your kids’ days off into an adventure. On January 12, the theme is “Nature Ninjas,” and on January 15 they take it to Philadelphia Rock Gym for a two-hour rock climbing session and then continue the outdoor adventure. Cost is $62 per day (member discounts apply), and extended day until 6 pm is available for an additional $15. There is also an additional cost for the rock-climbing portion.

Or if two hours of rock climbing isn’t enough, kids can spend the day learning bouldering and top rope skills, while also strengthening their problem solving, communication, and teamwork. Kids will also do team building exercises, arts and crafts, and even yoga to help with balance and body positioning. Choose from full day for $80 or half day til noon for $45. Extended care is also available for an additional $10 an hour. Philadelphia Rock Gyms have seasonal camps at all four of their locations in the area, so check out their website for all the options.

Arden Theatre Company

January 15, 9 am — 5 pm

Grades K-5

Hamilton Family Arts Center, 62 N. Second St., Philadelphia

 

At Arden Drama School, kids can participate “Play in a Day,” where kids work together to create an entirely original play. Every workshop is unique because it is entirely up to the kids.

Philly Art Center

January 12 and 15, 9 am — 3 pm (half day and extended care optional)

Ages 5 — 12

514 Bainbridge St. (Queen Village) or 2501 Olive St. (Fairmount), Philadelphia

 

Kids can spend the day in the studio at Philly Art Center’s Queen Village and Fairmount locations. Age groups are split up and guided by teachers who structure creative playtime where kids can draw, build, collage, paint, and more. Full day is $74, while a half day ends at noon and costs $37.

On the Main Line and Beyond

HomeCooked

January 15, 10 am — 1 pm, 2 — 5 pm

Ages 6.5-11

HomeCooked is adding a service component to its regular school break camp. They will supply extra ingredients for everyone to use to make extra pans of Shepherd’s Pie which will be donated to local families in need. Kids will also make a snack and a fun dessert to bring home!

Riverbend Environmental Education Center

January 15, 9 am — 3:30 pm

Ages 4-11

1950 Spring Mill Road, Gladwyne

 

The theme is Red Barn animal keepers for the day—kids will join the experts as they feed, clean, groom and exercise Riverbend’s special residents. Cost is $75/day with the option to add extended care.

The Handwork Studio

January 15, 9 am — 3 pm (morning and afternoon half days available)

Ages 5-12 for Handwork Camp; 9-15 for Fashion & Machine Sewing Camp

35 N. Narberth Ave., Narberth

 

Creative, project-based crafting is the name of the game at the Handwork Studio. Older kids can opt for a full day of fashion and machine sewing. Kids will leave with one or two completed projects. Early care and aftercare is available at an additional cost.

Marple Sports Arena

January 15

Let your kids enjoy an active break from school with rock climbing, skating, sports play, and arcade time at this fun center. Lunch can be provided or kids can bring their own and after care is available for those parents that need extended time.

Kehler’s Gymnastics 

January 15, 10 am — 3 pm

Ages 3.5-12

Kids will have a day of fun and games. They can play mini golf, swing into the foam pit, climb the rock walls, play in the massive fun zone and much more!

BSD Code + Design Academy

1149 Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr

 

Kids age 8 and older can create their own digital assistant at this one-day camp. The cost is $200 ($180 for members).
