Celebrate Smith’s Birthday at Kidchella Friday

The "kindie" concert series is back with three summer dates.

The second of this year’s three Kidchella shows is set for Friday afternoon — just in time for the Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse’s 118th birthday.

The kid-friendly summer music festival is back for its fourth year, with the third show scheduled for August 18. Friday’s edition will feature the rock band the Not-Its! and the child-friendly indie group Chibi Kodama.

In addition to the main stage in the playground, there will be a Youth Arts Zone beginning at 4 pm on Smith’s front lawn, featuring art stations led by ceramics and photography students from the Village of Arts and Humanities. Kathy O’Connell of WXPN’s Kids Corner will emcee musical performances by The Village of Arts and Humanities and Settlement Music School. The concerts begin at 6 pm.

Food trucks will be on site, or families can bring a picnic dinner.

On Friday, August 18, Alex and the Kaleidoscope and Pears 4 Bears will perform. Alex and the Kaleidoscope inspires children by singing about fun facts and different places around the world, while Pears 4 Bears incorporates puppetry into its musical performances.

Meg Wise, Smith’s executive director, said in a statement that Kidchella started as a small performance, but has since grown to welcome 2,000 children and adults from all over the area. (The name is a play on the Coachella Festival.)

“This year, we are excited to expand the festival even more to include a Youth Arts Zone that will highlight the talents of Philadelphia youth in our neighboring communities,” Wise said in a statement.

Tickets are $5 for Smith members and $10 for non-members. (Click here to buy now.) Philadelphia Family is proud to be a media partner for Kidchella, and our Supporting Members get 50 percent off tickets (as do Main Line Parent Supporting Members)! Want to join? Start here.

Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse is at 3500 Reservoir Dr., Philadelphia.
