Philadelphia Dance Day Returns July 28 with Free Dance Classes
Three Philly locations host free dance classes across genres, including lots of family-friendly options, all in one Saturday!
On Saturday, July 28, the city will unite in dance for Philadelphia Dance Day. This nonprofit festival features free classes and live performances from some of the city’s best-known instructors at three different locations in Philly.
The day culminates in a two-hour dance performance at the Gershman Y (401 S. Broad St.) at 8:30 pm. This will span the genres and feature instructors and students from participating studios, as well as a few pieces from semi-professional dancers. A $10 donation is suggested for the evening’s performance and refreshments.
You can join as many free workshops as you’d like throughout the day, and there is no need to pre-register; but they are offered on a first come, first served basis, so you may want to arrive a few minutes early to ensure your spot if you have your heart set on a particular class. Dancers under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
The littlest dancers can get involved in their own special class, taught by Nest’s beloved Miss Amanda Connor! The class is Creative Movement for kids ages 2.5-5, and will be held at the Gershman Y at 10 am.
At 10:30 am, also at the Gershman Y, kids age 6-11 can take a special hip-hop class led by Cristina Guzman of CEG Performing Arts Academy. Parents are welcome to participate as well!
In addition to those age-specific classes, there are plenty throughout the day that welcome dancers of all ages, ranging from fitness dance classes like Zumba to an all-levels improvisation workshop that incorporates theater games and collaboration to create a short dance together as a class.
Of course, if you want to take some time for yourself, there are lots of adult classes as well. See the entire Philadelphia Dance Day 2018 schedule here, and get your dancing shoes ready for Saturday!
If you just can’t wail until Saturday, The Oval+ is hosting a pre-party on Wednesday, July 25 from 7–8 pm. This all-ages outdoor dance party will be hosted by Philly Dance Fitness, and will combine a mix of Cardio Pop, Zumba and line dancing. No experience necessary, just jump in and follow along!
