Eat Worry-Free: Philly Area Allergy-Friendly Restaurants

Take the worry out of dining at one of these spots.

When you or your child has allergies, you know meals are sometimes served up with a heaping side of stress. Dinner at home can be tough enough, but going out to a restaurant often means coming armed with a long list of questions to ask the server about substitutions and how items are prepped and cooked. Lucky for you, more and more eateries are catering to customers with food allergies and sensitivities. Check out these Philly area allergy-friendly restaurants in our area to give you the freedom of a carefree meal.

Dinner and Lunch Fare

Blackbird Pizzeria

507 S. Sixth St., Philadelphia

This restaurant may be vegan, but their items will leave even the biggest carnivore drooling. Their “brunchbird” pizza combines tofu scramble, dairy-free cheese, seitan bacon, and spinach, making a delicious pie with a breakfast twist. This restaurant is great for vegetarians, vegans, and those with a dairy-allergy! And it’s not just pizza on the menu: Blackbird’s vegan cheesesteak has won citywide contests.

Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse

111 S. 17th St., Philadelphia

With an entire gluten-free menu at both lunch and dinner, you’re never left questioning whether the item you ordered is safe for you to eat. The seared George’s Bank sea scallops and pork belly served over lavender fava bean risotto is even better than it sounds! Staff members are educated about allergies, and can always make substitutions or omissions for their items on the regular menu.

Christopher’s: A Neighborhood Place

108 N. Wayne Ave., Wayne

335 E. King St., Malvern

Sometimes all it takes is a knowledgeable staff and flexible kitchen to make you feel safe and at home. Christopher’s has a wide range of delicious meals to choose from. The friendly staff will walk you through the menu, pointing out items fit for your allergies, and can make adjustments and substitutions whenever possible. They also have gluten-free pizza crusts, burger buns, chicken fingers, and more. Check their website for a full menu with all ingredients listed for each item. This family restaurant simply wants everyone to feel comfortable — allergies and all!

Bareburger

1109 Walnut St., Philadelphia

At Bareburger, the menu goes far beyond their delicious, customizable burgers which include beef, bison, pork, elk, and multiple vegetarian options — just to name few. Sweet potato fries, panko chicken tenders, and sriracha pork belly Brussels sprouts will complement your tasty burger. Of course everyone deserves to enjoy such delectable dishes, so when servers greet their tables, they’ll immediately inquire about any allergies, and do their very best to accommodate everyone. Gluten- and dairy-free options are served up daily, and once they even accommodated a beef allergy (a hard feat in a burger joint!) by sterilizing their grill before cooking up a pork burger for the customer!

Sweet Treats

Franklin Fountain

116 Market St., Philadelphia

Don’t let a dairy allergy keep you from enjoying a delicious frozen treat. Franklin Fountain serves up a variety of coconut milk-based ice cream flavors each day. They also always make sure to sanitize scoops between flavors, and will always do their best to accommodate any other allergy you may have.

Sweet Freedom Bakery

1424 South St., Philadelphia

1309 W Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr
