Philly Free Streets Returns this Saturday with Car-Free Fun on North Broad

Shut it down on North Broad Street, and come out for a morning of kids’ programming, art, frolicking, and more!

For five glorious hours this Saturday, August 11, Broad Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic from City Hall to Erie Avenue for Philly Free Streets. In place of cars, people are encouraged to come out to bike, walk, and play all morning. To add to the excitement, many cultural institutions and other organizations are getting in on the fun, and setting up activities along the route. From free museum admission to a 1500-square-foot beach, it’s going to be quite a morning! Here are our top family-friendly activities and intersections you’ll want to be sure to hit up with your kids.

Mural Arts Philadelphia

At various spots along North Broad Street, Mural Arts Philadelphia will host community art activities, educational meet-and-greets with Mural Arts docents to learn about particular murals along the route, and more. Help color in a jazz-themed median mural between Oxford Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue! And definitely be sure to stop by Fairmount Avenue for family-friendly make-and-take art activities.

Scavenger Hunt: Railroad Ticket to Black History on North Broad Street

North Broad Street has a rich history of African American history, from civil rights to jazz. Pick up a “railroad ticket” at six stops along the route and learn more about North Broad’s history. Coming from the direction of City Hall, the first stop on the “railroad” is Callowhill.

PHS Farm for the City (Thomas Paine Plaza, Broad Street and JFK Boulevard)

This amazing pop-up urban farm will be hosting a plant giveaway starting at noon (first come, first serve basis), and giving out coloring books about urban farming and community gardens for the kids.

PAFA (118-128 N. Broad St.)

Kids can participate in chalk drawing activities on the plaza and make wearable butterfly art. Plus, the museum is offering free admission all day!

Wood Street

Join The School of Pennsylvania Ballet for “Dance Me a Story!” where kids will learn how to tell a story through dance.

Callowhill Street

Come for a special storytime, as Philadelphia-born author Cousin John will read his children’s book Chase Does It All. You can also stop by and learn about the new immersive art installation FIGAMO.

The Beach on North Broad (1415 N. Broad Street)

For just two weekends, a 1500-square-foot beach will pop up on North Broad Street at Master Street, complete with 50 tons of sand, hammocks, games, activities, and more. It all kicks off Saturday at 8 am, and the Phillie Phanatic will visit from 10 am–11 am!

Temple University (Montgomery Avenue)

Temple will offer programming focused on health and fitness, art, music, and the community. Tour campus, create at stations featuring activities like drum-building and magnetic mosaics, and more!

3500 N. Broad Street, between Tioga and Venango

In front of Temple University School of Medicine, participate in Yoga and More—a series of fitness activities for all ages and fitness levels. At 11 am there’s a fitness class just for families! Also at this intersection, Shiners Hospital for Children will have yard games and snacks.

Germantown Avenue

Girls Jump Philly will jump rope between 10 am and noon. Also at this intersection, Mural Arts will highlight public libraries in Philadelphia through a ground mural, and Neighborhood Bike Works will activate a mobile bike shop.
