Philly Toy Store Momo’s Tree House Expands to Fitler Square
The Old City boutique comes to South Street.
The nostalgic delight of picking out the perfect toy inspired Heather Mohorn to open Momo’s Tree House. Now, the boutique toy shop has a second location, in Philadelphia’s Fitler Square neighborhood.
Mohorn, a former options trader, opened at Second and Arch streets in Old City three years ago.
“Old City was filled with locally owed boutiques, but there was nothing for kids,” she said. “That’s where I got the idea for Momo’s.”
To celebrate, the new store — at 2207 South St. — is hosting a grand opening party Saturday, September 16, from 10 am — 6 pm. Stop in for face painting, fossil digging, make-your-own putty activities, and a scavenger hunt with balloons and mini cupcakes while supplies last.
Weather permitting, these activities are planned to take place in the garden in the back of the Fitler Square location — something that sets it apart from the Old City location. The garden will be utilized for future events, as Momo’s is as much a neighborhood gathering spot as it is a toy store, with a storytime every Wednesday at 3:30 pm and Music Monkey Jungle on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:30 — 11 am at the Old City store.
Plans for expansion began about almost a year ago, and in a short time, Mohorn’s dream has bloomed. The new space on South Street — formerly a camping store — was actually recommended by some customers. Mohorn opened up the wall to make it light and bright, and brought the same philosophy: unique toys with a purpose.
“The toy selection will be the same as Old City’s, including games, puzzles, arts and crafts, pretend play, building toys, baby and toddler gifts, books, and active toys,” Mohorn said. “We focus on specialty items that you won’t find in big box stores.”
