‘Play With Purpose’ at Smith Memorial Playground This Monday

Spend Presidents Day at this special free event.

If your kids have off this Presidents Day with energy to burn, come to Smith Memorial Playground for a free day of fun, games, and some more surprises brought to you by the non-profit organization With Purpose and  Temple University’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. The Play With Purpose day will include open indoor and outdoor play, activity stations, music, food, and more all for a good cause.

The event is the result of a partnership between Temple’s PRSSA and With Purpose, a childhood cancer advocacy non-profit dedicated to giving kids with cancer greater access to safe and effective treatment options. Today, the organization is very much a youth-driven movement, partnering with academic institutions across the country to offer students internship and service-learning opportunities. Temple’s PRSSA chapter has taken on this leadership role and produced what is sure to be a very special event for Philadelphia families to enjoy.

With Purpose was founded by the family of a little boy named Sam diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, who set out to “manufacture joy at any cost,” taking him on adventures to fill his too-short life with play and happiness. In that spirit, Monday’s Play With Purpose event is a completely free day dedicated to educating parents and children about the therapeutic value of play.

Lorina Marshall-Blake, president of the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, is an expert on the subject and will speak in the afternoon on how play can benefit children mentally, physically and emotionally.

In addition to the attractions we all love at Smith’s expansive playground and three-floor playhouse, there will be free activities, including face painting, coloring, and games. There will also be storytelling provided by Read By 4th, a dance party by GP Entertainment, and yoga sessions provided by Sculpere to get both kids and grownups moving! If you get hungry, sponsors Lee’s Hoagie House, Saxby’s, and Philly Soft Pretzel Company are generously providing refreshments free of charge.

If all that’s not enough fun for you, there’s one more special guest we have neglected to mention: the Phillie Phanatic! Everyone’s favorite mascot will be at Smith from noon to 1 pm, so be prepared to capture that perfect selfie (oh, and your kids can take a picture with him too).

Play With Purpose will be held on Monday, February 19 from 11 am to 3 pm. The event will take place at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse located in Fairmount Park at 3500 Reservoir Drive in Philadelphia.
