Weekly Children’s Programs at Sister Cities Park

Children can explore nature, reading, and art at these free programs.

Summer programming for children is back at Sister Cities Park, with three weekly interactive educational programs starting June 5.

This year’s themes will be familiar to anyone who tried the popular activities last summer. Center City District is hosting Story Art with the Free Library of Philadelphia on Mondays at 10:30 am, Grow Up Green with the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation on Tuesdays at 10:30 am, and Nature in the Park with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University every other Thursday at 10:30 am.

Michelle Shannon, vice president of marketing and communications for the Center City District, said the biggest change this year is the reinvigoration of the Library in the Park Book Cart, which kids and their parents can use to check out books right in the park. She said there’s a new cart this year, new books, and a seating area with Adirondack chairs so families can read together.

“It’s kind of a bigger presence in the park than last year,” she said.

In addition to the book cart, kids can read in the park during Story Art on Mondays, which includes a storytime group with the Free Library, followed by a craft based on the book led by the Parks and Recreation department.

During Grow Up Green on Wednesdays, the Parks and Recreation department will teach kids about the different plants in Sister Cities Park through interactive outdoor games and activities.

Nature in the Park will also teach kids about nature, but through the lens of the Academy of Natural Sciences’ work, including activities about dinosaurs, nature, and history.

For adults, the BYOB event Pairings on the Parkway is back, so visitors can bring their favorite bottle of wine, listen to live music, and let their kids play in the Children’s Discovery Garden during extended hours for the event. Pairings on the Parkway is every Thursday from 5 to 8 pm.

A full list of events is available online. Sister Cities Park is located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway near 18th Street, halfway between City Hall and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The programs for children will happen weekly through August 7.
