REVIEW: Ivy + Bean Take the Stage at Walnut Street Theatre
Get ready for a musical adventure with the Walnut Street Theatre for Kids production of Ivy + Bean.
Disclaimer: I read every Ivy + Bean book to my daughter years ago and was already a fan of Annie Barrows’ Pancake Court duo. That said, this is a musical performance everyone will love, whether familiar with the stories or not, it’s a lovely adaptation of several storied tales and characters fully realized on stage.
Ivy and Bean are fast friends, buddies drawn together by wild imaginations. In this lively musical, they form an unlikely friendship when Bean decides to get revenge on her bossy, older sister, but they really discover their differences are what make their friendship so exciting.
Neighborhoods are whole worlds when you’re small; the familiar is close and simple; and grand adventures unfold between kids’ rooms and backyards. The light, versatile set delivers an entire landscape and the characters in brighter colors all pop before them.
The musical numbers are delightfully choreographed, and each character’s unique personality shows through their faces and motions: everyone delivers a great performance to children on the edge of their seats for the entire sixty minute show.
Ivy + Bean has 11:00 am matinees showing June 9 – 10, 2018, at the Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. Click here for tickets and more information.
